In the Middle East there is a deep patriarchal system that has prevented women from being fully self-expressed for many centuries. We won’t call it a war on women, because our western perspective is biased, and Islam is not something deserving of demonization. Nonetheless, girls playing basketball competitively in front of people is all but unheard of.
Enter 20 year-old Laylan, the captain of an upstart girls basketball team in Iraq. They won’t be qualifying for the Olympics any time soon, in fact, they are still learning how to play. Nonetheless Laylan has developed a passion for hoop and a drive to defy the conventions that have limited her and her female peers for years.
Props to Jordan brand for telling her story, and to Laylan and her friends for braving new territory, fighting for their freedom, and rising above expectations. This is the world according to Cre8tiveClass.
