At Cre8tiveClass we talk a lot about blazing your own trail and having a good ass time while you do it. Reggie Watts is a living example of this. He is equal parts comedian and musician, fusing the mediums in rambling performances featuring a variety of accents and loop-based acapella musical performances. He’s always entertaining, but on a recent TED Talk he satirized the very the platform he was on.

TED Talks feature dynamic speakers who share interesting information and insights on a wide variety of topics. Some are particularly poignant, but for every viral hit there are 10 that flop during the live TED Talk tapings. Reggie Watts chose to satirize the proceeding by speaking in foreign languages and British English infused with an academic air of superiority. More importantly, the verbose phrases he strung together made no sense. It was a tribute to everyone from intellectuals to poets who often use arrogance and big words to convince others that they’re brilliant simply because we can’t understand them. Much like the saying “all that glitters ain’t gold,” all that is cryptic ain’t wise.

One thing that does make sense however is his talented acapella musicianship. Even here though we see him mocking hip-hop with his syncopated nonsensical delivery. Perhaps the theme of his TED Talk was that things often aren’t what they seem, or maybe it was just to clown intellectuals and musicians by demonstrating that he can do what they do better without even doing it. Either way, we rock with this offbeat frumpy genius. Stay cre8tive yall.

When it comes to rules, we like to think they are made to be broken. After all, how are you supposed to do the extraordinary by abiding my ordinary rules and expectations. Nike chose to recognize the amazing progress of women’s sports with a super dope video project that serves as testament to breaking barriers. Whether you’re an athlete, an entrepreneur, or a teacher, don’t let the status quo dictate who you are and what you can accomplish. On his track “So Ambitious” it was Jay-Z who said, “I’m different. I can’t base what I’m gonna be off of what everybody isn’t.” Don’t be afraid to push forward and determine your own trajectory. Cre8te.
